Welcome to the incomparable Grace Akhrem! Grace, a Los Angeles native, has always been artistic and crafty. Grace’s designs are inspired by color, yarn, texture and fashion. Grace’s main goal as a designer is to design pieces that she would like to wear herself and she thinks others would too. Grace focuses on construction and technique in all of her designs.

Ten Finishing Techniques Every Knitter Should Know

  • This is a crash course in top ten techniques that will change your life as a knitter and take your projects from looking homemade to store-bought! Saddle up for some fun and learn from the master.

  • Approximately 200 yards of smooth worsted weight wool yarn in a solid light color

  • Materials:
  • A second 200 yards of the same yarn mentioned above in a contrasting color (solid color, not dark or heathered).
  • Size 7 U.S. needles
  • Size 7 U.S. (4.5mm) set of double pointed needles
  • Size 7 U.S. (4.5mm) 9" circular needles
  • Size 7 U.S. or 4.5mm crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Green or blue Chibi needle set (not yellow)
  • Three stitch holders (preferably double ended)
  • Point protectors (optional)
  • Pen or pencil for taking notes
  • Homework:
  • Please have all swatches and pre-work finished before you come to class.There will be absolutely no time for catching up on homework in class.
  • Swatches 1-2 (same color): CO 25 sts work 4” in st.st. BO all sts.
  • Swatches 3-5 (make three separate swatches, at least two in the same color): CO 30 sts, work in st.st. for 6 rows (ending with a purl row), cut yarn, place sts onto a holder leaving a 24" tail.
  • Swatch 6: On 9" circular needles and using one of your colors, CO 50 sts. Place marker and join in the round being careful not to twist your work. Knit five rounds even. Stop at this point, place point protectors onto needles if you prefer.
  • Swatch 7: CO 21 sts. Row 1: (P3, k2, p2, k2) twice, p3. Row 2: (K3, p2, k2, p2))twice, k3. Repeat rows 1-2 until piece measures 2" from CO edge ending with row 2.

Create Your Own Basic Toe-Up Sock Pattern

  • Sat 3/23 9am-1pm
  • Together we will properly take foot measurements and learn how to check gauge in the round without knitting in the round. In class we will learn the formula to create any toe-up sock for any gauge yarn and any foot measurement. In class we will knit a little mini-sock.
  • We'll learn the following techniques: Crochet provisional cast-on, short-row heel and toe, and elastic bind-off.
  • Recommended Yarn:
  • Louet Gems

  • Materials:
  • Tape measure

  • Stitch holder

  • Scissors

  • Tapestry needle

  • Stitch markers

  • Row counter

  • Swatch in St st. worked in the round (worked in a sock yarn on smaller needles)

  • Crochet hook in a mm size that corresponds to the mm size of your double point needles

  • Size 7 U.S. (4.5mm) double point needles

  • Worsted weight waste yarn in a contrasting color from your main yarn (in a smooth light color)

  • Worsted weight yarn in a light color (smooth in texture, preferably a solid color)

  • Notebook paper for note-taking

Combined Continental Or Russian Speed Knitting

  • Sat 3/23 2pm-5pm
  • Are you a continental knitter already and want to learn how to knit faster? This Russian Speed- Knitting technique could possibly be the fastest in the world. Learn how to minimize your motions and maximize your output.
  • Please make sure you come to the class comfortable with the following techniques: Continental knitting, cast on, knit, purl, bind, off, k2tog, and ssk.
  • Recommended Yarn:
  • Louet Gems

  • Materials:
  • Size 7 U.S. (4.5mm) needles (preferably wooden single point needles)

  • Worsted weight yarn in a solid (no heathers) light color that is also smooth in texture

  • Fee:

Introduction To Intarsia

  • Sat 3/23 5:30pm-7pm
  • In this class, we will knit the Preternatural Hat pattern. Have you ever wanted to learn how to work with larger blocks of color but have been too afraid of all the bobbins? We will dive into intarsia knitting without the intimidation of bobbins. Students should come to class with their yarn chosen and should have checked gauge before class. There will be no time to swatch or check gauge in class. Make sure to have your pre-work completed before class. Homework Required.

  • Recommended Yarn:
  • Shibui Knits Staccato and Shibui Knits Silk Cloud

  • Materials:
  • Preternatural Hat knitting pattern, by Grace Akhrem.

  • Fingering weight yarn in two colors (as the pattern suggests)
  • Size 4 (3.5 mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Pencil for note-taking
