Beginner Baby Sweater

Designed by Elizabeth Zimmerman in 1968, this garter-stitch, kimono-style cardigan has become a classic. Knit the BSJ and build your knitting skills at the same time!

You will learn how to knit a one-piece garment, make double-decreases, increases, buttonholes and other skills. Simple, detailed pattern instructions will be provided. At the end of class you will have a baby sweater to use, gift or save for a future baby shower.

Come in to the shop and pick your colors to knit one of the most popular baby sweaters in the knitting world. Pattern is provided. Homework is required.

  • Make a swatch.
  • Cast on 24 sts. Work in garter st (knit every row) for 2-3 inches. Cast off.

  • Size 6 to 9 mos: 300 – 450 yards of DK weight yarn
  • Size 9 mos to a year: 300 – 450 yards of Worsted weight yarn
  • Circular needles 24” or 32” length. Needle size is dependent on yarn chosen. Bring extra needles in sizes one larger and one smaller than your preferred size.
